Construction

HONEware Construction Details:

Clay, like all mediums, can teach the craftsman how to use it. When building pieces, the form and the function in their unity is what we are essentially trying to perfect and highlight. While there are several aspects to pipe making today's amazing glassworkers utilize that we also utilize such as airflow, mouthpiece shape, percolation, vacuum, we do not approach our craft through emulation of glass pipes. Clay is different, the construction methods are different, and the outcomes are different, and we listen to the clay first, designing pipes that are taking advantage of what our medium has to offer rather than forcing it to do what glass does.

For example: Many of our oil rigs are left unglazed either on the inside, the outside, or both. This allows the piece to stay cool taking advantage of the material with astonishing results. One of the nicest things I've noticed with my own piece is that I can take "air hoots" of just the rig itself, as in no dab, no heat or nail, just pulling like you would when testing the mouthpiece, with no water, and getting beautiful tastes of sweet oil, mostly in the nose. "Clay is cooler than glass....by about 10 degrees.." So if this is so great why haven't more bongs been doing it?  Because they were bongs, for plant material, which we all know makes nasty water.  Now we can smoke oils, free of any stinks that may seep into the pieces.  This is an old idea (problem) applied to something new, dabbing.

Cleaning: All pipes are glazed throughout the inside EXCEPT FOR the bisque oil rigs mentioned above. This means they can be cleaned like we clean our great glass pieces, salt-ISO 99%, in a bag under hot water.  The bisque oil rigs are meant to only be used with high quality oils and will naturally soak up the oils into the clay. Because of this ISO is not recommended on these rigs.  As with many things surrounding dabbing, we're breaking new ground and still have a lot to learn. Another point is this could reduce reclaiming direct from the unglazed rigs so either use a reclaim catch at the insert or just leave em be and in ten years you will have the sweetest tasting rig on the planet, may even get better with age....we'd love to hear from you then.

These solid objects are balanced for table and bar use, and feel good in the hand.  Built to last and bottom heavy, each one is hand made and unique, yet in a family. Most water vessels are sealed with food grade non-toxic glaze up to and/or around the mouthpiece and up the pipeline.  I use the "magic water" as glue in all my joints.  A new bonding mix, handmade, more info on our GUARANTEE page.

One of the key parts to a good smoke is the mouthpiece. We’ve worked out a few shapes that out performed all others. Our shapes match their respective rigs in look and functionality, and are easy to pull, carb and control. The mouthpiece has to work with the other parts of the rig, so the smoke reaches the mouth the right time and in the right space. Our mouthpieces open the lips just so, to recive the dose with maximum potential.

The build. One simple natural perc-hole leading into the right shaped vessel, was both the most functional, as well as the strongest to make, so most of our rigs are built with one pull line from a 14mm insert point for your bangers nails or bowls to the bottom of the water chamber. While we recommend using a reclaim attachment at the insert joint, our fully glazed pieces are all 100% reclaim safe. Just place it in your oven on low upside down over a receptacle and let 'er drip.
